Mistakes to Avoid on Your PCS Move

Cody Day

At a member of the military, you are all too familiar with PCS orders. You get the notice that you're going to be re-stationed, and you immediately start planning for relocation. PCS moves do not always go smoothly, but if you're able to avoid the mistakes below, your experience will be less of a hassle.

Mistake #1: Taking too much time to plan everything perfectly.

It would be a mistake not to plan your move at all, but it's also a mistake to over-plan. If you set your mind on getting everything planned out perfectly before you start moving, you'll start moving too late. Moving companies won't have as much availability, the better apartments may be gone, and you won't have as much say in your schedule. Plan a little, but don't get too hung up on the details. Start making phone calls and setting things up immediately.

Mistake #2: Buying a new house right away.

Buying a new house from out of town can be quite challenging. It's not impossible, but it is more of a headache than most people need when following PCS orders. A better idea is to ask your real estate agent to find you a short-term rental in your new location. Then, once you're moved into town, your agent can help you find a place to purchase if that's your ultimate plan.

Mistake #3: Putting things in storage in your current town.

You might think you'll be coming back to your current town in a year or two, but plans can change rapidly in the military. If you have items you plan on putting in storage, have your moving company bring them to your new town and park them in a storage unit there. This keeps you from accumulating storage units across the country as you move from city to city for the military over the next few years.

Mistake #4: Trying to rent out your current home after you move.

You might think you can earn more money by holding onto your current home and renting it out after you move. But this is often more of a headache than it is worth, and owning that home often reduces the amount that a bank is willing to lend you towards your new home. Instead, work with your realtor to sell your current home either just before or just after you relocate.

By avoiding the mistakes above, you can have a better military moving experience. For help with your military relocation, speak to a real estate agent near you.
